With great anticipation we began our cooking class with Lorenzo. Beforehand we reviewed the menu – a showcase of Bologonese cuisine. Then a trip to the markets in Bologna. Parking proved to be a challenge, but we eventually found a spot right out the front of the Piazza e Basilica di San Domenico. In front of us sat the tomb of Rolandino de’ Passeggeri by Giovanni – apparently the tomb needed to be elevated because the students of Rolandino decided to relieve themselves in the vicinity (eww!). On to the markets where we procured ingredients and equipment from several stores. Firstly a super sized rolling pin for the pasta, next bread (and a little bomboline!) from Paolo Atti & Figli Panificio. Then to Salumeria Simoni with an extensive selection of cheeses and local salamis, a few vegetables from the market then finishing our shopping with a quick stop off at the tavern Osteria del Sole – which has been operating since medieval times and boasts photos from famous patrons over the years (bizarrely including Buffalo Bill).
