Florence

Just don’t go to Florence. It is undeniably spectacular, but sadly, the crowds and lines of people make you feel as though you’re in a Las Vegan replica. At least you could laugh at the replica; enjoy the irony. It is one of the worst travel experiences JM and AW have had. Do the Florentines a favour and stay away.

At least we weren’t staying there – an easy day trip from Bologna made it manageable. But I repeat – don’t go. Just don’t.

Even the mighty Uffizi is a disappointment – unlike many of the smaller galleries where you can appreciate and enjoy great art in a peaceful setting at a manageable pace and scale, the Uffizi is an absolute nightmare. At least the Louvre is professionally operated; the Rijksmuseum elegantly presented. Sure there are some great works of art there, but trust me, you’re not going to appreciate or enjoy the work. Here’s a few tasters…

…and then there’s this chap, who bears a striking resemblance to somebody in Bjelke-Petersen’s cabinet. Prize-money for the reader who picks the lookalike.

The queue. There’s always a queue.
