First dip in the Mediterranean

The preferred method for defeating jetlag has always been to stay up as late as possible so as to counter the body’s desire to slip into its homely rhythm. AW said bah-humbug to this and took his shrimp-eyes to bed at around 7:15. Despite the best efforts of all residents as Casa Chaotica to keep him from his slumber, he and his beloved JM slept through until 6:30 the next morning, jetlag-free and ready for everything Ajaccio had to throw at them.

Coffee was the first essential item, and this was acquired fairly swiftly. When these two get on the scent, no bean is safe. Before too long the day got hot, and that can only lead to one thing…well maybe two things…beaches and beers. And whaddya know. We found both. The local brew – Pietra – made from the usual suspects but with, of all things, chestnut flour, was remarkably delicious. Sometimes the local fave can be a bit of a stinker (check: VB, XXXX) but on this occasion we were pleasantly surprised. A full-bodied amber ale served as cold as the weather dictates. And the beach…well, what can I say…our first dip together in th Mediterranean was memorable for being so damned Mediterranean. Turquoise water, clear as crystal and perfectly refreshing. The GoPro got its first underwater exposure, and the results are there for you to enjoy.

And Ajaccio? Despite being somewhat daggy and charmless, I can’t complain about much at all. Good lord, we’re on holiday. On the other side of the world. In Corsica. It’s brilliant.

Oh, and the local aperitif, Cap Corse. Superb.
